How to Draw a Desk (Easy Step by Step)
A desk is a great first object to draw because it is built from rectangles and straight lines. You add a lamp and a cup of pencils on top, and it starts to look like a real study corner. Once you can draw this, you can make your own desk with any extras you like.

Step 1: The desktop
Draw a long, flat rectangle with rounded corners across the middle of your paper. Make it thin, like a long, flat board.
Step 2: The left leg
Under the left end of the desktop, draw a tall, skinny rectangle that reaches down toward the bottom of the page. Start the two side lines right under the desktop and join them with a short line at the bottom.
Step 3: The drawer box
Under the right end of the desktop, draw a tall rectangle that is about as high as the leg. Start its two side lines at the desktop and join them with a line at the bottom.
Step 4: Drawer lines
Draw two straight lines across the drawer box, side to side, to cut it into three drawers.
Step 5: Two drawer handles
In the middle of each of the two lower drawers, draw a short, fat line with round ends, like a tiny sausage. Leave the top drawer empty for now.
Step 6: Lamp base and stem
On the left side of the desktop, draw a low, flat dome sitting on the desktop for the lamp base. Then draw one straight line going up from the middle of the dome.
Step 7: The lamp shade
At the top of the stem, draw a trapezoid, which is a shape that is narrow on top and wide on the bottom, like a party hat with the point chopped off.
Step 8: Pencil cup and last handle
On the right side of the desktop, draw a cup that is wider at the top than at the bottom, with its bottom on the desktop. Draw a few tall, skinny pencils poking out of the top. Then add a short, fat handle to the top drawer.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a desk
- Draw the long desktop first and leave room above it for the lamp and cup. The leg and drawers hang below it, so they will fit if the desktop sits in the middle of the page.
- The drawer box and the leg should end at the same height at the bottom. Draw a light line across the page to line them both up.
- The pencil cup is wider at the top than at the bottom. Start with the top line, then bring the sides in a little as you draw down.

How to color your desk drawing
Try warm brown or light wood colors for the desk, and a bright color for the lamp shade. For a creative twist, color each pencil a different color or give each drawer a different color.
Desk fun fact for kids
The "lead" in a pencil is not lead at all. It is graphite, a soft gray-black mineral mixed with clay, and it leaves a mark when you rub it on paper.
Questions about drawing a desk
What shapes do I need to draw a desk?
You need rectangles for the desktop, leg and drawer box, and a trapezoid for the lamp shade. A few straight lines and short rounded lines finish the rest.
How do I make my desk look more real?
Keep the leg and drawer box the same height, and add a handle to each drawer. Adding a lamp and a cup of pencils on top makes it look lived in.
How do I draw the pencils in the cup?
Draw a few tall, skinny shapes that stick up above the cup. Make one a bit taller so they look different.
