Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: The top petal
Draw a rounded bump at the top, like a small rainbow or a hill. This is the first petal of your flower.
Step 3: The side petals
Draw a wide rounded petal on the left and another on the right, each starting where the top petal ends. Make them bulge outward like two big ears.
Step 4: The bottom petals
Add two puffy petals at the bottom, one on each side. Let their curves meet in a small dip in the middle, below the center of the flower.
Step 5: Petal fold lines
Draw four short curved lines inside the flower, two near the top petal and two near the sides, each starting at the edge and stopping before the middle. Then add one tiny line going up from the dip at the bottom.
Step 6: The dark center
Draw a fat oval in the middle of the flower and fill it in solid dark.
Step 7: The stem
Draw two long, gently curved lines going down from the dip between the bottom petals. Close the bottom with a little rounded end.
Step 8: The left leaf
Start at the stem and draw a big leaf sweeping out to the left. Make the top edge wavy with a small notch, and curve the bottom edge back to the stem.
Step 9: The right leaf
Do the same on the right side of the stem: sweep up and out to a rounded tip with a little notch, then curve the bottom edge back to meet the stem.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a California poppy
- Draw the top petal first, then add the side petals so they start exactly where the top one ends. This keeps the flower looking balanced.
- The short fold lines inside the petals should stop before the middle. Leave a gap so the flower looks open and soft.
- For the stem, draw one gentle curve first, then a second curve beside it. Keep them about the same distance apart all the way down.

Questions about drawing a California poppy
What shapes do I need to draw a California poppy?
You need rounded bumps for the petals, an oval for the center, two long curved lines for the stem, and two leaf shapes. Nothing needs to be perfect.
How many petals does a poppy have?
Real California poppies usually have four petals. This drawing uses five rounded petals, which makes a fuller, friendlier flower.
How do I make my poppy look more real?
Make the petals slightly different sizes and let the stem curve a little. Real flowers are never perfectly even, and that is what makes them look alive.
