Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The round body
Draw a big, wide oval in the middle of your page, a little wider than it is tall. It is like a plump egg lying on its side.
Step 3: The tail fin
On the left side of the body, draw a fan shape that looks like a bow tie. Start at the upper left of the body, curve out to the left, dip in at the middle, then curve back to the lower left of the body.
Step 4: The top fin
On top of the body, draw a soft, bumpy hill. Start on the upper left of the oval, curve up and over, and end on the top of the oval. Give it one little dip so it looks like a ruffle.
Step 5: The little bottom fin
Near the bottom left of the body, draw a small curved half-moon that hangs down below the oval. Start and end the curve on the body line.
Step 6: The round eye
Near the right side of the body, draw a circle and color it in completely. Make it the darkest spot on your fish.
Step 7: The tiny lips
On the far right edge of the body, draw a small oval that sticks out a little like a pouting mouth. It is a bump on the oval, so the lines connect to the body.
Step 8: The happy mouth
Below the eye, in the middle of the body, draw a small curved shape like a bowl. Start with a short slanted line on top, then curve down and around, like a little open smile.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a guppy
- Draw the oval body first and make it big. Everything else attaches to it, so a roomy body gives the fins plenty of space.
- The tail is the trickiest part. Think of a bow tie: draw the top loop, dip in at the middle, then draw the bottom loop about the same size.
- Leave some space between the eye and the lips so the face does not feel crowded. Fill in the eye completely with a dark crayon or marker.

How to color your guppy drawing
Try bright orange or blue for the body with lighter fins, like a real fancy guppy. For a creative twist, give your guppy a rainbow tail with a different color in each curve.
Guppy fun fact for kids
Guppies are small freshwater fish, and they have live babies instead of laying eggs. A mother guppy can have dozens of tiny fish, called fry, at one time.
Questions about drawing a guppy
What shapes do I need to draw a guppy?
You need one big oval for the body, a bow-tie shape for the tail, and small curved shapes for the top and bottom fins. The eye is a filled-in circle and the lips are a tiny oval.
How do I make my guppy look cuter?
Make the eye big and round, and give the fish a curvy little mouth. A bigger, rounder body also helps it look friendly.
Why does my guppy tail look uneven?
Try drawing a light line down the middle of the tail first. Then make the top and bottom loops match, one on each side of the line, and erase the line when you are done.
