This little dog sits in front of an empty cupboard, just like the dog in the old nursery rhyme about Old Mother Hubbard. It is built from simple shapes: two rectangles for the cupboard, straight lines for the shelves, soft curves for the fluffy head and floppy ears, and short lines for the body and paws. The tiny dot eyes and small nose do most of the storytelling.

How to draw a dog at an empty cupboard step by step

Step 1: The cupboard frame
Draw a big rectangle with rounded corners for the outside of the cupboard. Then draw a second rectangle inside it, leaving a little gap all the way around, and leave a small gap in the bottom edge in the middle.
Step 2: The back shelf
Draw two long, straight lines side by side across the top of the cupboard, from the left inner edge to the right inner edge. Make them wiggle a little near the middle and leave a gap there, where the dog's head will go.
Step 3: Sides of the head
Draw a curved line on the left side of the head that bends down like a bracket. Then draw another curved line on the right side, ending in a little hook for the floppy ear.
Step 4: Face, body and paws
Add two round dots for eyes and a small Y shape for the nose and mouth. Then draw wobbly lines down each side for the body, and finish with short curved lines at the bottom for the legs and paws. Add a tiny line at the right for the start of the tail.
Step 5: Empty left shelves
On the left side of the cupboard, draw two straight lines side by side, going from the inner frame toward the dog. They show the shelf with nothing on it.
Step 6: The curly tail
On the right side, draw a short curved line that starts near the dog's back and curls over like a little hook. It joins the small tail line you drew before.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a dog at an empty cupboard
- Draw the dog's head with gentle, bumpy curves instead of one long smooth line, so the fur looks fluffy.
- Keep the two eyes the same size and far apart. Dots placed low on the face make the dog look extra sweet.
- Draw the cupboard frame and the back shelf first, and leave a gap in the middle. Then the dog's head can sit right in front of the shelf lines.

Questions about drawing a dog at an empty cupboard
What shapes do I need to draw a dog at a cupboard?
You need two rectangles for the cupboard, straight lines for the shelves, soft curved lines for the fluffy head and floppy ears, and short lines for the body, paws and tail.
How do I make my dog look cuter?
Place the eyes wide apart and low on the face, and keep the nose small. Round, bumpy edges and big floppy ears also make a dog look extra cuddly.
How do I make the dog look like it is sitting inside the cupboard?
Leave gaps in the shelf lines and the bottom of the frame so the dog's head and paws overlap them. That tells the eye the dog is in front of the shelves.
