How to draw a zipper step by step

How to Draw a Zipper · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The big body

Draw one big rounded shape with a bump on each side near the top, like a bunny face. Start at the top left, curve down the side, sweep along the bottom, and come back up the right side. Leave a gap at the top middle.

  3. Step 3: Right V line

Starting at the gap in the top middle, draw one long curved line that slants down and to the left. Stop in the middle of the body, a little above halfway.

  4. Step 4: Left V line

Start at the top left of the gap and draw a curved line that slants down and to the right. Stop in the middle, close to where the first line ends, so the two lines make a V.

  5. Step 5: Tape edges and pull tab

Draw a second curved line right beside each V line, from the top down to the middle, to make two narrow strips. Where the strips meet, keep going down and around to make a long rounded pull tab, like a teardrop.

  6. Step 6: The two eyes

Fill in two round dots, one on each side of the V. Put them at the same height so your zipper looks friendly.

  7. Step 7: Teeth and slider

Draw short little dashes across each narrow strip to make the zipper teeth. Then add a small square slider where the two strips meet, and a tiny bar inside the pull tab.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a zipper

  • Draw the two V lines lightly first. They should slant toward each other and meet near the middle, so you can fix them before pressing hard.
  • Draw a second line beside each V line to make a narrow strip. Keep the strips about the same width on both sides.
  • The teeth are the trickiest part. Make the dashes short and roughly the same size, and space them evenly down each strip.
  • Draw the pull tab as a long teardrop that is narrow at the top and round at the bottom, and keep it centered under the V.

The word zipper comes from the zipping sound it makes. It was first sold as a "hookless fastener" in the early 1900s, and a company later made the name "Zipper" popular.
