A baby giraffe is a great first animal to draw because it is built from simple shapes: ovals, circles, and long skinny rounded rectangles. The tall neck and the round spots make it look friendly right away. Once the shapes are down, the fun part is adding the little horns, the leaf-shaped ears, and the tail with its small loop.

How to draw a baby giraffe step by step

How to Draw a Baby Giraffe · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The head

Draw a wide oval near the top of your page for the head. Start at the lower left, curve up and over the top, then round down the right side, and stop before you close the oval.

  3. Step 3: Horns, eyes and snout

Draw two short sticks on top of the head with a small circle at the end of each for the horns. Add two round dot eyes, then draw a smaller oval at the lower front of the head for the snout and put two tiny dots inside it for nostrils.

  4. Step 4: The ears

Draw a small leaf shape sticking out from each side of the head. Point the tips outward and tuck the rounded ends against the head.

  5. Step 5: Neck, body and tail

Draw two long curved lines down from the snout area for the neck. Then draw a big round oval for the body where the neck ends, and add a long curved tail on the right that ends in a small loop.

  6. Step 6: Four legs

Draw four tall, skinny shapes with rounded bottoms hanging down from the belly. Make them about the same length, in two pairs, so your giraffe stands steady.

  7. Step 7: Spots

Draw small oval rings on the neck and body for spots. Make some bigger and some smaller, and space them out so they do not touch.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a baby giraffe

  • Draw the neck lines slightly curved and let them lean, so the neck bends from the head down to the body instead of standing straight like a pole.
  • The snout is the trickiest part. Draw it as a small oval that overlaps the lower front of the head, and leave a gap in the head oval there so the lines do not cross.
  • Draw the four legs the same length and start them from the bottom edge of the belly. Leave a little space between each pair so they do not blur together.

Try warm yellow and orange with brown spots, and a pink nose. For a creative twist, give your giraffe rainbow spots or a patchwork of different patterns.

Baby giraffe fun fact for kids

A giraffe has the same number of neck bones as you do: seven. Each one is just much, much longer.

Questions about drawing a baby giraffe

What shapes do I need to draw a baby giraffe?

You need a wide oval for the head, a smaller oval for the snout, a big oval for the body, two long curved lines for the neck, and four tall skinny shapes with round bottoms for the legs.

How do I make my giraffe look cuter?

Keep the head big and round, and set the dot eyes wide apart. Little round-tipped horns, leaf-shaped ears, and a tail with a small loop add extra charm.

How do I draw giraffe spots?

Draw them as small oval rings of different sizes, spaced out so they do not touch. Try not to line them up in rows, since real spots are scattered.
