Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The dragon hood
Draw a big oval for the hood. Make it a little wider than it is tall, and leave room below it for the body.
Step 3: Two pointy horns
On top of the hood, draw two small pointed horns, one on each side. Start each horn on the hood line, curve up to a point, and come back down to the hood.
Step 4: The open mouth
Inside the lower part of the hood, draw a big rounded oval for the open mouth. Make the top edge wavy and bumpy, because that is where the teeth will go.
Step 5: Big round eyes
Above the mouth, draw two circles side by side for the dragon's eyes. Leave them empty for now.
Step 6: Body and arms
Below the hood, draw two lines going down for the sides of the body. Add a skinny arm on each side that ends in a small circle for a hand, and close the body with a wavy line along the bottom.
Step 7: Bat-like wings
Draw a wing on each side of the body, next to the arm. Start at the shoulder, curve out, then make a few pointy scallops along the bottom edge.
Step 8: Little feet
At the bottom of the body, draw two flat ovals side by side for the feet. Let them touch the bottom of the body.
Step 9: The curly tail
On the right side near the feet, draw a long curved tail that sweeps out and curls up at the end. Add a row of small spikes along the top of it.
Step 10: Face and tooth details
Draw a dot in each dragon eye, then little bumpy teeth along the top of the mouth. Inside the mouth, add two dots for the kid's eyes and a curved smile. Finish with a small curve under the hood for the shirt collar and tiny marks at the sleeves.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a kid in a dragon costume
- Draw the hood oval first and make it big. The mouth, eyes and horns all need to fit inside or on top of it.
- The bumpy teeth line is the trickiest part. Take your time and keep the bumps small and close together along the top of the mouth.
- Keep the two wings about the same size by checking that they start at the same height next to the body.
