Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Cape side lines
Draw two curved lines that slope down and away from each other, like the sides of a little bell or tent. Start both near the top, where the head will go, and let them spread out as they go down.
Step 3: The round head
Draw the bottom of a circle that starts at the top of the left cape line and curves round to the top of the right one. Leave the top open for now, because the hat will cover it.
Step 4: The pointy hat
Draw a flat oval across the top of the head for the brim. Then draw a tall cone rising from the brim, with the tip bending over to one side like a floppy point.
Step 5: Broom and stripes
Draw a long straight stick across the middle of the cape, with a small round knob at the right end. At the left end, draw a wide fan shape for the bristles with a couple of short lines inside. Under the stick, add two tiny pairs of short dashes where the legs will go.
Step 6: Legs and boots
Draw two tall tube shapes hanging down from the broom stick. Round off the bottom of each one into a little boot with a toe that points out to the side.
Step 7: A happy face
Draw two small dots for eyes, side by side in the middle of the face. Add a little smile curve underneath.
Step 8: The crescent moon
In the sky to the right of the hat, draw a big curved C shape for the moon. Then draw a second curve inside it so the moon looks like a thin banana.
Step 9: Twinkling stars
Draw one small star in the sky at the top left. Draw another small star near the knob of the broom at the bottom right. Make each one with five little points and soft rounded corners.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a witch flying on a broom
- Start with the two curved side lines of the cape, then draw the head so it sits between their tops.
- The hat is the trickiest part. Draw the oval brim first, then draw the cone rising from it and bend the tip over to one side.
- Draw the broom stick first, then hang the legs from it. This makes the witch look like she is really sitting on the broom.

The English word "witch" comes from the Old English word "wicce", which people used more than a thousand years ago. A fun story idea: where is your witch flying to tonight, and who is waiting for her there?
Questions about drawing a witch flying on a broom
What shapes do I need to draw a flying witch?
You need a circle for the head, curved lines for the cape, an oval and a cone for the hat, and a long thin stick with a fan shape for the broom. The moon adds a curve and the stars add a five-point shape.
How do I make the witch's hat look floppy?
Draw the hat's cone with a curved tip that bends to one side instead of going straight up. A bent tip makes the hat look soft and playful.
How do I make my witch look cuter?
Give her a big round head, two small dot eyes and a tiny smile. Little striped boots and a bright crescent moon in the sky add extra charm.
