  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The center circle

Draw a big round circle in the middle of your paper. This is the flower's face, and every petal will grow out of it.

  3. Step 3: The top petal

Start at the top of the circle and draw a tall rounded petal shaped like an upside-down egg. Let both sides curve up and meet at the top, then come back down to the circle.

  4. Step 4: Upper side petals

Add a big rounded petal on the upper left and another on the upper right. Start each one at the circle and sweep out to the side and down. On the left, finish with a short straight line back to the circle.

  5. Step 5: Lower side petals

Draw a rounded petal on the left and one on the right, just below the upper side petals. Start at the end of each side line, curve down and around, and finish back at the circle.

  6. Step 6: Bottom petals

Draw two petals side by side below the circle. Start with one straight line going down from the bottom of the circle, then curve a round petal out on each side of it.

  7. Step 7: Small back petals

Tuck two little petals behind the top one, one on each side. Draw a small curved bump that starts at the top petal and peeks out above the big side petals.

  8. Step 8: The happy face

Draw two small dots for eyes, side by side in the upper middle of the circle. Under them, draw a curved smile like a little bowl.

  9. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a smiling flower

  • Draw the center circle first and keep it fairly large. The petals need room to fit all the way around it.
  • Each petal is a rounded egg shape. If one comes out lopsided, that is fine, because real petals are never exactly the same.
  • Draw the two small back petals after the big ones, and make them smaller so they look tucked behind.

A sunflower head is not one flower but hundreds of tiny flowers, called florets, packed together in the center.

Questions about drawing a smiling flower

What shapes do I need to draw a smiling flower?

You need one circle for the center and a handful of egg or oval shapes for the petals. The face is two small dots and a curved line.

How do I make my flower look cuter?

Put the eyes a little far apart and the smile low and wide. You can also make the center circle a bit bigger so the face has more room.

How many petals should my flower have?

This flower has nine petals, but you can use any number you like. Five or six big petals also make a nice flower and are quicker to draw.
