How to Draw a Hot Dog (Easy Step by Step)

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The bottom bun
Draw a wide bowl shape with a flat bottom and rounded corners, like a big smiling cup. Make the top edge a gently curved line that connects the two sides.
Step 3: The sausage
Draw a long rounded rectangle that sticks out past the bottom bun on both sides. Start at the left side of the bun, draw the top line straight across, and curve the ends back down to meet the bun on the right.
Step 4: The top bun
Draw a wide, low dome above the sausage. Start on the top line of the sausage near the left, curve up and over, then come back down to the top line near the right.
Step 5: The wavy mustard
Draw a wiggly line of little waves across the sausage, with rounded tops and rounded bottoms. Keep your hand moving in a steady up and down rhythm from the left end to the right end.
Step 6: Mustard curls
Add a small curl at each end of the wavy line. On the left, make a little hook, and on the right, flick the line up and outward.
Step 7: Eyes and smile
Draw two small round dots for eyes on the bottom bun, spaced far apart. Between them and a little lower, draw a small curved smile.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a hot dog
- Draw the bottom bun first and make it nice and wide, because the sausage and top bun line up with it.
- Let the sausage ends stick out past the bun on both sides so it looks like it is tucked in.
- For the mustard, practice the wavy line on scrap paper first and keep the waves about the same size.

How to color your hot dog drawing
Try golden tan for the buns, a warm reddish brown for the sausage and bright yellow for the mustard. A light tan for the face dots and smile keeps them easy to see, or leave them dark.
Hot dog fun fact for kids
Hot dogs are often called frankfurters because that style of sausage is named after Frankfurt, Germany.
Questions about drawing a hot dog
What shapes do I need to draw a hot dog?
You need a bowl shape for the bottom bun, a long rounded rectangle for the sausage and a low dome for the top bun. A wavy line makes the mustard.
How do I make my hot dog look cuter?
Place the eyes low and far apart and draw a small smile between them. Round, soft corners on every shape also help a lot.
How do I get the mustard waves even?
Start at one end and make quick up and down strokes at a steady speed. Count the waves as you go so both sides finish with a similar size.
