A genie is fun to draw because the bottom of the body turns into a swirly tail of smoke instead of legs. This genie is built from simple shapes: a big circle for the head, a straight headband, a small diamond jewel, a few curved loops for the arms, and a wide oval lamp. Kids can practice circles, curves and swirls all in one picture.

How to draw a genie step by step

How to Draw a Genie · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The round head

Draw a big circle for the head near the top of the page. Leave a tiny gap at the bottom of the circle where the chin will be.

  3. Step 3: Headband, face and collar

Draw a straight band across the head, with pointy ends that flare out on each side. Under it, add two dots for eyes and a little curved smile. Below the chin, draw a small V for the collar with a short wiggly line on each side and two tiny dashes underneath.

  4. Step 4: The jewel

Above the band, near the top of the head, draw one small diamond shape for the jewel.

  5. Step 5: The neck

Under the chin, draw a short curved line across to close the gap and make the neck. It sits right above the V of the collar.

  6. Step 6: Folded arms

Draw a rounded loop on each side of the body for the arms, bending in toward the middle. Then draw a long wavy line across the front to join them, like arms folded across the chest.

  7. Step 7: The waist sash

Below the folded arms, draw two flat, stretched ovals that overlap around the waist. They make the sash that wraps around the genie.

  8. Step 8: The smoky tail

From each end of the sash, draw a curvy line that swoops down. Let the left line flick out toward the left at the bottom, and the right line curve down and in, so the tail looks like a curl of smoke.

  9. Step 9: Lamp and smoke puff

At the bottom, draw a wide flat oval for the lamp, with a smaller oval inside it near the top. Then add a little curly puff of smoke on the right side.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a genie

  • Draw the head circle first and leave plenty of room below it, because the body and smoky tail need lots of space.
  • Draw the headband straight across the head, then flare out the ends on each side. Draw it lightly first if it looks wobbly.
  • The tail is the trickiest part. Make two curvy lines that swoop down from the waist, and let them flow with a relaxed hand.

Questions about drawing a genie

What shapes do I need to draw a genie?

You need a big circle for the head, a small diamond for the jewel, rounded loops for the arms, flat ovals for the sash and a wide oval for the lamp. The smoky tail is made of two long curvy lines.

Start at the sash with two lines and curve them down like a tornado. Let the ends flick out near the lamp, and finish with a small curly puff of smoke on the side.
