A Christmas stocking is a great first holiday drawing because it is built from just a few easy shapes: a long boot, a fluffy cuff, and a curved candy cane. A little loop and a striped candy cane peek out of the top to finish it off.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Fluffy cuff
Near the top of your page, draw a wide, short shape lying on its side, with rounded ends. Make the top and bottom edges wavy, like a row of soft clouds.
Step 3: The stocking shape
From the bottom corners of the cuff, draw two long lines going down. Let the right line bend out into a round toe, then close the shape with a flat line along the bottom.
Step 4: Hanging loop
On the top left of the cuff, draw a small arch like an upside-down U. Both of its ends sit right on top of the cuff.
Step 5: Candy cane
Behind the cuff on the right, draw a tall candy cane. Draw the stick as two lines side by side, then curve them over at the top into a hook, like an upside-down J. Let the bottom of the stick disappear behind the cuff.
Step 6: Candy cane stripes
Draw short slanted lines across the stick, spaced out evenly, so it looks wrapped in ribbon. Add a couple more across the hook too.
Step 7: Toe and heel patches
Draw a small curved line inside the toe and another inside the heel, to make two rounded patches. Each line starts on the bottom edge of the stocking and ends on its side.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a Christmas stocking
- Draw the cuff first and a bit wider than the stocking, so the boot hangs down from it like a real stocking.
- The boot is the trickiest part. Draw the left side as a long, slightly curved line, then let the right side bend out toward the round toe.
- For the candy cane, draw the stick first, then curve the top over into a hook.

Christmas stocking fun fact for kids
One old legend says Saint Nicholas dropped gold coins down a chimney, and they landed in stockings hung by the fire to dry. Many people think this is where the Christmas stocking tradition comes from.
