How to Draw a Gecko (Easy Step by Step)
This friendly gecko is built from simple shapes: a circle for the head, an oval for the body, and bendy legs with little toes. The curly tail and the four belly rings give it its look. It is a great first reptile to draw because every part is easy on its own.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: The round head
Draw a round head near the top of your paper. Leave a small gap at the bottom, where the neck will go, and leave room underneath for the body.
Step 3: The body sides
Draw two curved lines going down from the bottom of the head, one on each side. Bend them outward to make the sides of a tall oval body. Leave the bottom open.
Step 4: The front legs
Draw two bendy legs sticking out from the top sides of the body, one on each side. Make each leg with two curved lines that start at the body and spread out and up.
Step 5: The back legs
Near the bottom of the body, draw two more legs, one on each side. Use two curved lines for each leg and point them down and out, like the gecko is climbing a wall.
Step 6: Front toes
At the end of each front leg, draw a few short little lines that spread out like a tiny fan. These are the toes.
Step 7: Back toes
Do the same at the end of each back leg. Draw a few short toe lines that spread out.
Step 8: The curly tail
Start at the bottom of the body and draw two long curved lines side by side that go down and then curl to the right. Join them at the end so the tail finishes in a little curl.
Step 9: Face and belly
Draw two small dot eyes and a little curved smile on the head. Add a short curved line under the head and another across the bottom of the body to close it. Then draw four small rings on the belly.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a gecko
- Draw the head and body first and then add the legs, so all four legs start from the sides and look balanced.
- Make the four legs about the same length. Try measuring the first one against your finger before you draw the others.
- For the tail, draw one long curved line first and then a second line next to it. This keeps the tail the same width all the way to the curl.

How to color your gecko drawing
Try bright green for the body with yellow or orange rings on the belly. For a creative twist, color each ring a different color so your gecko looks like it is covered in jewels.
Gecko fun fact for kids
Many geckos can climb smooth walls and even walk upside down on ceilings, because their toe pads are covered in tiny hairs that cling to surfaces.
