Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Bag body and rim
Draw a box that gets a little narrower at the bottom, with a flat top and a slanted corner at the bottom left. Then add a long straight line just below the top edge to make the rim.
Step 3: Small rim marks
Near the top left corner, draw a tiny dash on the corner and a short line under the rim. Cross that short line with a tiny up-and-down tick.
Step 4: The side fold
Draw a long line going down from near the top left corner of the front, leaning just a little to the right. Add a short slanted line in the bottom left corner to show the bag's folded bottom.
Step 5: The outer handle
Draw a tall arch above the bag, like a rainbow. Start on the left side of the top edge, curve up and over, and come down on the right side.
Step 6: The inner handle
Draw a second, smaller arch inside the first one. Start on the left near the rim, curve up to the peak, then bring the right side down so the two arches look like a thick paper strap.
Step 7: Handle ends and knobs
Draw a short line down from each side of the inner arch onto the front of the bag. At the bottom of each line, draw a small filled circle.
Step 8: The eyes
Draw two round dots in the middle of the front of the bag, side by side. Fill them in so they are nice and dark.
Step 9: The smile
Draw a small U-shaped curve between the eyes and just below them. Keep it small and friendly.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a shopping bag
- Start the bag as a light box that is slightly narrower at the bottom. It is much easier to fix a pale sketch than a dark line.
- The handle is the trickiest part. Draw the big outer arch first, then tuck a smaller arch inside it so the two curves look like they match.
- Draw the eyes the same size and keep them level with each other. Then put the smile right in the middle below them.

How to color your shopping bag drawing
Try a bright color like sunny yellow or coral for the bag, and a different color for the handle. Color the little knobs and the face dots a dark color so they stand out.
Shopping bag fun fact for kids
In 1871, an American inventor named Margaret Knight designed a machine that folded and glued paper into flat-bottomed bags, the kind of paper bag still used today.
