How to draw a galaxy step by step

  1. Step 1: The bright center

Start in the middle of your page with a small circle. Draw a bigger circle around it, with a tiny circle in the very middle too, so it looks like a target.

  2. Step 2: First spiral arm

Above and to the left of the center, draw a long curved shape like a fat banana. Start with a point at the upper right, sweep it around the left side, and end with a rounded tip below the center.

  3. Step 3: Second spiral arm

On the right side of the center, draw another banana shape. Start with a rounded tip just above and right of the center, curve it up and over to the right, then sweep it down to a point at the bottom.

  4. Step 4: Third spiral arm

Draw the last banana shape below the center. Start with a short rounded tip just below the center, then sweep it down and out to the left until it ends in a point on the left side.

  5. Step 5: Three small circles

Draw three small circles with a tiny dot inside each one. Put two on the left side of the page and one on the right, outside the spiral arms.

  6. Step 6: Dots near the center

Add a few tiny dots in the empty spaces between the arms close to the center. Put one on the left of the center and two on the right.

  7. Step 7: Dots near the edges

Finish with a few more tiny dots scattered farther out. Put one at the top, one near the right arm, and two at the bottom.

  8. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a galaxy

  • Draw the center circles first and leave lots of space around them, because the spiral arms need room to swirl outward.
  • Make all three arms curve in the same direction, like a pinwheel. If one curls the wrong way, the swirl will look lumpy.
  • Draw each banana shape with one rounded end near the center and one pointy end far away. This makes the arms look like they are spinning.

How to color your galaxy drawing

Try deep blues and purples for the arms with a bright yellow center, and leave the small circles and dots white or yellow. For a creative twist, color each arm a different color of the rainbow so your galaxy looks like a spinning pinwheel.
