This little tailor is built almost entirely from circles, ovals and boxes, so it is a friendly first character to draw. A big round head, a boxy apron and a pair of scissors make it feel like a real workshop. The dress form next to the tailor adds a fun extra shape to practice.

How to draw a tailor step by step

How to Draw a Tailor · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: The big round head

Draw a big, wide oval near the top of the page. Leave room underneath for the body.

  3. Step 3: The apron body

Under the head, draw a box with slightly rounded corners, a little narrower than the head. Make the bottom line curve gently.

  4. Step 4: Glasses and smile

Draw two circles side by side for glasses and join them with a short line. Draw a smaller circle inside each one, then add a little curved smile below.

  5. Step 5: Straps and stripes

Draw two long thin boxes going down the front of the apron from the top. Add short lines across them for stripes. Then add a small mark on the left side and a few tiny lines at the bottom edge of the apron.

  6. Step 6: Arms and hand

On the left, draw a curved arm with a small bumpy loop for the hand at the end. On the right, draw a long curved line stretching out from the apron for the other arm.

  7. Step 7: Two oval shoes

Under the apron, draw two flat ovals side by side so they touch in the middle. These are the tailor's shoes.

  8. Step 8: The big scissors

At the end of the outstretched arm, draw two pointy blade shapes that make a V, crossing in the middle. Finish with two round loops at the bottom for the handles.

  9. Step 9: The dress form

Next to the tailor, draw a tall shape with a rounded top and a narrow waist for the dress form. Add a tiny loop on top, a curved line down the middle, and a long pole with a flat line at the bottom.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a tailor

  • Draw the head oval first and make it big, then fit the body underneath so the two parts do not run off the page.
  • The scissors are the trickiest part. Start with the two pointy blades in a V, make them cross in the middle, then add the round loops below.
  • Keep the two glasses circles the same size by drawing the left one first and copying it on the right.
