How to Draw a Windmill: easy drawing guide for kids

How to Draw a Windmill (Easy Step by Step)

A windmill is a friendly drawing made from just a few shapes: a tall tower that gets narrower at the top, an arched door, a small round window, a little hub with a roof, and four long rectangle blades. The blades cross in an X, which makes the whole picture feel like it is turning in the breeze.

How to draw a windmill step by step

How to Draw a Windmill · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Tower base and top line

Draw a flat line along the bottom, then a slanted line going up from each end so the sides lean toward each other. Leave the top open, then draw a short flat line above the tower, in the middle.

  2. Step 2: Door and window

Near the bottom middle, draw a tall arch for the door: two straight sides standing on the ground line with a round top. Above the door, draw a small circle for the round window.

  3. Step 3: The hub

On the short flat line at the top, draw a small rounded bump like an upside-down U. This is the center where the blades will join.

  4. Step 4: Upper left blade

Starting near the hub, draw a long thin rectangle that stretches up and to the left. Close the far end with a short line.

  5. Step 5: Upper right blade

Draw a second long thin rectangle starting near the hub and stretching up and to the right, about as long as the first blade.

  6. Step 6: Lower left blade and roof

Draw the third blade stretching down and to the left. Then add a curved line over the top of the hub, like a little hill, for the roof.

  7. Step 7: Lower right blade

Draw the last long thin rectangle going down and to the right, so the four blades make an X shape. Close the end with a short line.

  8. Step 8: Blade slats

Inside each blade, draw short lines across from one side to the other, evenly spaced like the rungs of a ladder.

  9. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a windmill

  • Draw the tower first and make the two sides lean in evenly. If one side is steeper, the windmill will look like it is tipping over.
  • The blades are the trickiest part. Imagine a big X on top of the tower and draw each blade along one arm of the X, making all four about the same length.
  • Draw the slats as quick short lines across each blade, and keep the spaces between them about the same.

How to color your windmill drawing

Try a red or brown tower, a dark door, and light wood-colored blades with pale slats. The roof over the hub can be a different color, like gray or dark red.

Windmill fun fact for kids

Windmills have been used for hundreds of years to grind grain into flour. The wind turns the blades, and the blades turn heavy millstones inside that crush the grain.

Questions about drawing a windmill

What shapes do I need to draw a windmill?

You need a tall tower that is wide at the bottom and narrow at the top, an arch for the door, a circle for the window, a small bump for the hub and four long thin rectangles for the blades.

How do I make the blades look even?

Imagine a light X across the top of the tower, then draw each blade along one arm of the X. Matching lengths makes it look balanced.

How do I make my windmill look like it is spinning?

Try tilting the whole X of blades a little, so the blades are not perfectly straight up and down. A tilted X looks like it has turned.
