How to Draw a Parrot (Easy Step by Step)
A parrot is a fun first bird to draw because it is built from simple shapes: one peanut-shaped outline for the head and body, a curved hook for the beak, and leaf shapes for the wing and tail. It sits on a branch, so you also get to practice drawing a long, rounded rectangle. Once you finish the lines, you can color it in as brightly as you like.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Head and body
Draw one smooth outline shaped like a peanut or a snowman. Start with a rounded head on top, pinch in a little for the neck, then swell out into a bigger, plumper belly and close the shape at the bottom.
Step 3: The branch
Draw a long, flat rounded rectangle, like a fat sausage lying on its side, under the body. This is the perch where your parrot sits.
Step 4: The curved beak
On the left side of the head, draw a curved hook like a question mark lying on its side. Start at the top of the head, swoop out to the left and down, and curl the tip inward.
Step 5: Lip and eye
Under the beak, draw a small rounded lip that joins the beak to the face. Then add a little round dot for the eye, above the lip and near the beak.
Step 6: The wing
In the middle of the belly, draw a wing shaped like a teardrop or a leaf with the point at the top. Make the bottom edge wavy, like little feather zigzags.
Step 7: The legs
Draw two tiny short lines going down from the bottom of the body to the branch. These are the little legs.
Step 8: Head feathers
On top of the head, add two small loops side by side that look like tiny leaves. They make a fun crest.
Step 9: The tail feathers
Under the branch, draw three long pointy ovals that hang down like leaves. Start each one at the branch and fan them out a little.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a parrot
- Draw the head and body as one smooth peanut shape, with the head smaller than the belly. Pinch in a little where the neck is.
- The beak is the trickiest part. Start with a simple curved hook and then curl the tip inward, taking your time on the curve.
- Make the three tail feathers the same leaf shape but slightly different lengths. Start each at the branch so they look like they hang down naturally.

How to color your parrot drawing
Try a bright red body with blue and yellow in the wing and tail, and an orange beak. For a creative twist, give your parrot a rainbow tail with a different color on each feather.
Parrot fun fact for kids
Many parrots can copy sounds they hear, including words people say. Their feet also have two toes pointing forward and two pointing back, which helps them grip branches and even hold food.
