How to Draw a House Finch (Easy Step by Step)
A house finch is a good first bird because it is mostly one big, round shape. You draw a puffy outline, a small tail, and one curved wing. Add two eyes, a seed-shaped beak, and a branch, and you have a sweet little bird sitting right on the page.

Step 1: Head and body outline
Start at the lower left and draw a big, round, puffy curve up and over the top for the head, with a tiny bump on the right side where the head meets the body. Keep curving down the right side and stop near the bottom, leaving the bottom open.
Step 2: The tail
At the lower left, where the body line ends, draw a small pointed flap that sticks out to the left. Come back along the bottom toward the right with a gentle zigzag and stop in a little point.
Step 3: The wing
Start at the left side of the body, right where the tail begins. Draw a smooth curve that sweeps to the right and bends up, like a little wing tucked against the body.
Step 4: Eyes
Near the top right of the head, draw a big filled dot for one eye. Then add a much smaller filled dot at the right edge of the head for the other eye.
Step 5: The beak
Between the two eyes, draw a small seed shape that is pointed at one end and round at the other. Fill it in so it stands out.
Step 6: The branch
Under the bird, draw two long, slightly slanted lines that run side by side, one above the other. Close the right end with a short curve so it looks like a round stick.
Step 7: Tiny toes
On the branch, under the left side of the body, draw two short slanted lines. Draw two more under the right side, like toes wrapping around the branch.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a house finch
- Draw the head and body outline in light pencil first. The round, puffy look is what makes this bird cute.
- Start the tail where the body line ends at the lower left, and keep it small and pointed so it does not get bigger than the wing.
- Draw the branch after the body so the little toe lines can wrap around it. Keep the toes short so the bird looks like it is gripping.

How to color your house finch drawing
Try a soft brown for the body and wing, with a rosy red patch on the head and chest, and a warm brown branch. For a creative twist, make a whole flock of finches in rainbow colors sitting along one long branch.
House finch fun fact for kids
Male house finches often have red or orange feathers on their heads and chests. They get that color from pigments in the foods they eat, like berries, seeds and fruit.
