Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The outer circle
Draw a big circle in the middle of your page. Go all the way around until the line meets where it started.
Step 3: The inner circle
Draw a second circle inside the first one, leaving a small, even gap all the way around. This makes the raised rim of the coin.
Step 4: The star
In the middle of the inner circle, draw a star with five points. Start at the top point and zigzag down, out, and back in until you return to the top.
Step 5: The shine curve
Inside the inner circle on the upper left, draw a short curved line that follows the edge of the circle, between the star and the edge. It looks like a little glint of light.
Step 6: Sparkle lines
Up and to the right of the coin, draw three short straight lines that point away from it, like rays. Make each one slant a little differently.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a coin
- Draw the inner circle after the outer one, and keep the gap the same width all the way around so the rim looks even.
- For the star, make a light dot for each of the five points first, then connect them. It is the trickiest part, so go slowly.
- Keep the shine curve short and place it on the upper left, inside the inner circle, in the space between the star and the edge.

Try gold and yellow for the coin, with a slightly darker orange rim and a lighter star. For a creative twist, make it a pirate treasure coin or a magic coin that sparkles in rainbow colors.
Coin fun fact for kids
Coins have been used for more than 2,500 years. Some of the very first ones were made in ancient Lydia, in what is now Turkey, and were stamped with pictures of animals such as lions.
Questions about drawing a coin
What shapes do I need to draw a coin?
You need two circles, one inside the other, and a five-point star in the middle. A short curved line and three small straight lines finish it off.
How do I draw a perfect circle for a coin?
Trace around a cup or a lid with a light pencil line, or practice drawing a big circle in the air first. Drawing slowly and turning the paper as you go also helps.
How do I make my coin look shiny?
Add the little curved line inside the rim and the sparkle lines outside the coin. When you color, leave a small patch of white or light yellow near the curve to look like a glint of light.
