How to Draw a Canoe (Easy Step by Step)
A canoe is a fun first boat to draw because it is mostly curves and a few straight lines. You will build it from a wide smile shape, two little boxes for seats, two long ovals for paddles, and some wiggly water. Once you can draw this one, you can add a lake, a tree, or a friend sitting inside.

Step 1: The bottom curve
Start with a big, wide smile shape for the bottom of the boat. Draw one long curve that dips low in the middle and swoops up on both sides.
Step 2: The boat sides
Above the first curve, draw a wider curve for the sides of the boat. Start at a pointy tip on the left, curve down to meet the ends of the smile, run across the top of it, and swoop up to a pointy tip on the right.
Step 3: The top edge
Connect the two pointy tips with a soft, drooping line across the top of the boat. It sags a little in the middle, like a gentle smile.
Step 4: The seats
Draw two small open boxes sitting on the top edge of the boat, one on the left and one on the right. Each one is a rectangle with no bottom.
Step 5: Crossed paddle poles
Draw two long straight lines that cross each other in an X shape in the middle of the boat. The bottom ends rest on the top edge of the boat, and the top ends point out and up.
Step 6: The paddle blades
At the top end of each pole, draw a long oval, like a leaf or a spoon. Tilt the left one to the left and the right one to the right.
Step 7: Little water waves
Under the boat, draw short wavy lines that look like gentle squiggles. Make one on the left, one on the right, and a longer one in the middle a little lower down.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a canoe
- Draw the big smile-shaped bottom curve first and leave plenty of room above it. The seats and paddles need space to fit on top.
- The crossing paddle poles are the trickiest part. Make one straight line from top left to bottom right, then the other from top right to bottom left, so they meet in the middle.
- Make the wavy water lines by drawing a gentle S shape and repeating it. Keep the middle wave longer than the two side ones so the picture feels balanced.

How to color your canoe drawing
Try a warm brown or red for the boat, tan for the seats, and bright yellow for the paddle blades, with blue waves underneath. For a creative twist, draw a sunset sky behind the canoe and color the water orange and pink.
Canoe fun fact for kids
Many canoes were first made by carving out a single big tree trunk. Some Native American peoples also built light canoes from birch bark stretched over a wooden frame, and the boats could be carried on a person's shoulders.
Questions about drawing a canoe
What shapes do I need to draw a canoe?
You need curved smile shapes for the boat, two open rectangles for the seats, two long ovals for paddle blades, and some wavy lines for water. Straight lines make the paddle poles.
How do I draw the paddles so they cross?
Draw two straight lines that make an X in the middle of the boat. Then add an oval at the top end of each line to make the paddle blade.
How do I make my canoe look like it is floating?
Draw a few wavy lines just below the boat. Leaving a small gap between the boat and the waves makes the canoe look like it is gliding on top of the water.
