A pumpkin is a great first drawing because it is mostly one big round shape with a few curved lines inside. You only need an oval, some long bendy lines, a small stem and a curly tendril. The leaf and spiral make it feel like it just came out of the garden.

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The round body

Draw a big wide oval, like a squashed ball, in the middle of your page. Make the top a little flat with a tiny dip in the middle where the stem will sit.

  3. Step 3: Middle ribs

Inside the oval, draw two long curved lines that bow outward, like the sides of a barrel. Start both at the top edge and end at the bottom edge, leaving a wide space between them.

  4. Step 4: Side ribs

Add one more curved line on the left and one on the right, between the middle ribs and the outer edge. Curve them the same way so the pumpkin looks round.

  5. Step 5: The stem

On top of the pumpkin, draw two short lines going up from the dip. Close the top with a short bumpy curve so the stem looks like a little tube.

  6. Step 6: The leaf

Next to the stem, draw a leaf shape like a pointy lemon. Start at the stem, curve out to the left, and meet in a point at the far tip.

  7. Step 7: Leaf vein

Draw one straight line through the middle of the leaf, from the pointy tip toward the stem.

  8. Step 8: Curly tendril

On the right side of the stem, draw a wavy line that stretches outward. Finish it with a small spiral, like a snail shell.

  9. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a pumpkin

  • Draw the body oval big and wide before anything else, so the ribs and stem have room to fit.
  • Curve the rib lines like the sides of a barrel: bowed out in the middle, closer together at the top and bottom.
  • The spiral is the trickiest part. Draw a loose wave first, then curl the end around and around, getting smaller each time.

Pumpkins are technically a fruit, because they grow from a flower and hold seeds inside. A single pumpkin can have hundreds of seeds.
