Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The round body
Start near the top right and draw a big, round curve that sweeps over the top, down the left side and along the bottom. Stop at the bottom right and leave a gap on the right side. This is the bird's head and body in one.
Step 3: The left wing
Start at the left side of the body and draw a line reaching out to the left. Curve it around into a rounded tip, then bring a bumpy line back to the body, like a few soft scallops for feathers.
Step 4: The raised wing
Start at the top right of the body and draw a long, straight line going up and to the right. Round off the tip, then bring a bumpy line back down to the right side of the body to finish the wing.
Step 5: The tail
At the bottom right of the body, draw a short line going down, then curve it out to the right into a rounded tail shape. Add a tiny curved line at the bottom to show one tucked feather.
Step 6: Eyes and beak
Draw two small dots for the eyes, side by side on the face. Between them, a little lower, add a tiny short curved line for the beak.
Step 7: Sky clouds
Draw a puffy cloud in the top left by making a row of round bumps joined into one closed cloud shape. In the bottom left, draw a smaller bumpy curve that arches up like the top of a cloud.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a flying bird
- Start with a big, round curve for the body and make it nice and smooth. Everything else grows out from it, so take your time here.
- The raised wing is the trickiest part. Draw the long straight top edge first, then add the bumpy feather edge underneath.
- Keep the eyes small and close to the little beak line. This makes the bird look sweet and a little surprised.

How to color your flying bird drawing
Try soft blue or yellow for the bird, a lighter color for the wings, and a pale blue sky with white or pink clouds. For a creative twist, give each wing feather its own rainbow color.
Flying bird fun fact for kids
Many small birds flap their wings so fast that you can hardly see them move. Hummingbirds can beat their wings dozens of times every second.
Questions about drawing a flying bird
What shapes do I need to draw a flying bird?
You need a big round shape for the body, two bumpy wing shapes, and a small rounded shape for the tail. Two dots and a tiny curved line make the eyes and beak.
How do I make my bird look cuter?
Make the body extra round and plump, and keep the eyes small and close to the beak. Rounded wing tips instead of sharp points also help a lot.
How do I draw wings that look like they are flapping?
Draw one wing pointing up and the other reaching out to the side. Bumpy lines along the wing edges look like feathers and make the bird seem to move.
