A light switch is a great first drawing because it is built from rounded rectangles you already know how to make. This one sits on a soft, squishy square plate and has a happy little bulb with a smile next to it. Once you can draw boxes inside boxes, you can draw this.

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The wall plate

Draw a big square with very round corners, like a soft pillow. Then draw a second rounded square just inside it, leaving a small gap all the way around.

  3. Step 3: The switch frame

In the middle of the plate, draw a tall rectangle with rounded corners. Make it about a third as tall as the plate.

  4. Step 4: The inner frame

Draw a slightly smaller tall rectangle inside the first one, with rounded corners too. Leave a little space between the two lines.

  5. Step 5: The rocker button

Just inside the inner frame, draw short curved lines along the top, down the left side and across the bottom. They make the edge of the button, and they do not need to join up all the way.

  6. Step 6: The little bulb

To the right of the switch, draw a small circle for the bulb. Keep it about the size of a coin.

  7. Step 7: Face, base and rays

Give the bulb two dot eyes and a small curvy smile. Draw a short line across the bottom of the circle for its base, then add short straight lines around the top like sunshine.

  8. Step 8: Shiny sparkles

Near the top left of the plate, draw a curved shine line and add two small dots near it. Then add a tiny curved shine in the top left corner of the button.

  9. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a light switch

  • Draw the plate lightly first. Its corners should be very round, so think of a pillow, not a box.
  • The two switch rectangles are the trickiest part. Draw the outer one first, then the inner one with an even gap all the way around.
  • Keep the bulb's smile small. Two dots and one curve is all the face needs.
