How to Draw a Spruce Tree (Easy Step by Step)
A spruce tree is a great first tree to draw because it is a tall triangle shape with a short rectangle for the trunk. The wavy zigzag branches give it a cozy, friendly look, and a few dots and dashes finish it off. Once you can draw this one, you can make a whole forest.

Step 1: Pointy top
Start at the very top with a pointy tip. Draw a short curve sloping down to the left, then another sloping down to the right, ending in a tiny curl, like a little hill.
Step 2: Wavy side branches
Continue down the left side and the right side of the tree with wavy, zigzag lines that tuck in and then poke out. Make both sides match as best you can.
Step 3: Lowest wide branches
Keep going to the lowest, widest layer. Draw a big curvy branch on each side that swoops out and ends in a bumpy bottom edge near the middle.
Step 4: Bottom edge bump
Draw a short wavy line in the gap at the bottom middle to join the two bumpy bottom edges together.
Step 5: The trunk
Under the bottom of the tree, draw two short straight lines going down. Close them at the bottom with a flat line to make a stubby rectangle, and add a little wavy bit where the trunk meets the tree.
Step 6: Three small dots
Near the top of the tree, add three small dots: two side by side and one tiny one off to the right.
Step 7: Needle marks
Scatter a few marks inside the tree. Draw one small dot, two little smile-shaped curves, and one short curved dash lower down on the left.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a spruce tree
- Imagine a light triangle first, then draw the wavy branch layers along its edges. The triangle keeps your tree from leaning.
- The zigzag edges are the trickiest part. Draw each branch as a small hook that goes in, then pokes out, and make the layers a bit wider as you go down.
- Keep the trunk short and a little narrower than the bottom of the tree. Add the dots and dashes last so they do not crowd the outline.

How to color your spruce tree drawing
Use two or three greens for the branches and a warm brown for the trunk. For a creative twist, color the dots as bright ornaments, or turn the whole tree snowy with white crayon on top of each branch.
Spruce tree fun fact for kids
Spruce trees have short, stiff needles that grow all the way around each twig, and their cones hang down from the branches instead of pointing up. Many people pick a spruce as their holiday tree.
Questions about drawing a spruce tree
What shapes do I need to draw a spruce tree?
Think of a tall triangle for the tree and a small rectangle for the trunk. Then turn the triangle's sides into wavy branches.
How do I make my spruce tree look fuller?
Add more branch layers and make each one stick out a little farther than the one above. A few little curved needle marks inside also help.
How is a spruce different from a pine tree?
Spruce trees are usually shaped like a neat cone with short, stiff needles, and their cones hang down. Pines often have longer needles and a looser shape.
