Step 1: The backboard
Draw a big rectangle with softly rounded corners near the top of your paper. This is the board the ball bounces off.
Step 2: The small square
Inside the backboard, draw a smaller rectangle in the middle. Leave some space around it on every side.
Step 3: The net shape
Under the middle of the backboard, draw two slanted lines that get closer together as they go down. Join them at the bottom with a short, slightly wavy line, like a flower pot.
Step 4: The rim
Draw a gently curved line across the top of the net, from one side to the other. This is the hoop the ball goes through.
Step 5: The ball
Inside the net, draw a U shape that curves down and back up. This is the bottom of the round ball.
Step 6: Ball lines
Draw one straight line down the middle of the ball. Then add a curved line across it to make a cross, like a window.
Step 7: The pole
From the bottom of the net, draw two straight lines going down, side by side, close together. They make a tall thin pole.
Step 8: The base
At the bottom of the pole, draw a long rounded rectangle lying flat. It holds the whole hoop up so it does not tip over.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a basketball hoop
- Use a ruler or the edge of a book for the backboard if you like, but wobbly lines look friendly too. Just keep the corners round.
- The net is the trickiest part. Draw the two slanted sides so they get closer together toward the bottom, then join them with a short line.
- Draw the U shape for the ball first, then add the cross lines. If the ball comes out a little squished, nobody will mind because it still looks like a ball.

Basketball hoop fun fact for kids
A basketball hoop is 10 feet off the ground in almost every game, from kids' leagues to the pros. The first hoops were peach baskets nailed to a wall in 1891.
Questions about drawing a basketball hoop
What shapes do I need to draw a basketball hoop?
You need two rectangles for the backboard, a trapezoid-shaped net, a curved line for the rim, and a U shape for the ball. The pole is two straight lines and the base is a long rounded rectangle.
How do I make the ball look like it is inside the net?
Draw the net and rim first, then draw the ball inside the net. Because the ball sits within the net lines, it looks like it is dropping through.
How do I make my basketball hoop look more real?
Color the ball orange and make the cross lines on it nice and dark. You can also use a ruler for the backboard so the edges look straight.
