Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Scalloped roof
Draw a wide, flat top line with the sides curving down and out, like a big floppy hat. Finish the bottom edge with a row of little scallop bumps.
Step 3: Walls and ground
Draw two straight lines going down from under the roof, one on each side. Join them at the bottom with a flat ground line, and curl each end up into a little round loop.
Step 4: Chimney and smoke
On the left side of the roof, draw a small tall box with a flat lid on top. Then add three short curvy dashes floating above it for puffs of smoke.
Step 5: The arched door
In the middle of the wall, draw a door shaped like an upside-down U. Start on the ground line, go up, curve over the top, and come back down. Add a small dot for the doorknob.
Step 6: Two windows
Draw a small rounded square on each side of the door. Then draw a plus sign inside each one to make four little panes.
Step 7: Bumpy bushes
In each bottom corner, draw a short wavy line with two or three soft bumps, sitting on the ground line. These are the bushes.
Step 8: Roof details
Add three short, slanted dashes on the roof to look like thatch or straw. Finish with one tiny dot between them.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a fairytale cottage
- Draw the roof wider than the walls so it hangs over the sides like a big hat. This overhang makes the cottage look snug.
- The scalloped roof edge is the trickiest part. Try to make each bump about the same size, working one at a time from left to right.
- Draw the door arch slowly, starting at the ground and curving over the top. If it wobbles a little, that is fine, because wobbly lines look storybook-like.

How to color your fairytale cottage drawing
Try a golden yellow roof, pale cream walls, a bright red door, and green bushes. For a fun twist, color the smoke in rainbow stripes as if a friendly dragon lives inside.
Fairytale cottage fun fact for kids
Many old cottages in England and Ireland really do have thatched roofs, made from bundles of dried straw or reeds. A well-made thatched roof can last for decades.
