How to Draw a Chili Dog: easy drawing guide for kids

How to Draw a Chili Dog (Easy Step by Step)

A chili dog is a great first food drawing because it is built from long curves and wavy lines. You start with the bottom of the bun, add a sausage on top, tuck the back of the bun behind it, and finish with a wiggly squiggle of chili. Every line is a simple curve, so it is easy to feel proud of the result.

How to draw a chili dog step by step

How to Draw a Chili Dog · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: Bottom of the bun

Follow the light oval guide. Start at the upper left, curve down and around the bottom, and stop at the right end with a tiny curl. Leave the top open.

  3. Step 3: Top edge of the bun

Draw a long wavy line along the top of the bun, from the upper left corner down to the right end. This is where the hot dog will sit.

  4. Step 4: Top of the sausage

Above the bun's wavy edge, draw a long, gently curving line like a hill. Start near the bun's upper left and let it slope down to the right.

  5. Step 5: The sausage ends

At the left, draw a round arch that rises above the bun and meets the sausage line. At the right end, draw a short curved line across, joining the bun to the end of the sausage.

  6. Step 6: The back bun

Start near the top of the left arch and draw a long curve along the back of the sausage. Sweep it around the right end and down to the bottom right. It is the other half of the bun, tucked behind the sausage.

  7. Step 7: The chili squiggle

On top of the sausage, draw a wiggly line that goes back and forth like a snake. Start on the left and let it slide to the right, with round bends.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a chili dog

  • Follow the light oval guide for the bun. It is the biggest shape, and everything else sits on top of it.
  • The two long wavy lines along the top (the bun edge and the sausage) should run in the same direction, like two roads side by side. Draw them slowly in one smooth motion.
  • For the chili squiggle, think of a snake and draw it in one go without lifting your pencil. A few bumpy bends look more fun than a perfectly neat line.

Chili dog fun fact for kids

The word "frankfurter" comes from Frankfurt, Germany, a city where a style of sausage was made long ago. The name is also where "frank" for a hot dog comes from.

Questions about drawing a chili dog

What shapes do I need to draw a chili dog?

You need a long curved shape for the bun, a wavy line and a long curve for the sausage, and a wiggly line for the chili. Two small round ends finish the sausage.

How do I make my chili dog look tastier?

Draw a thick, bumpy squiggle of chili and color the bun a golden brown. The more bends in your squiggle, the more it looks like chili.

Why does my sausage look flat?

Make the sausage lines curve a little, and let the ends peek out past the bun. Those round ends help it look like it is sitting in the bun instead of lying flat.
