  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: The pot

Draw a short straight line across for the top rim. Then curve two sides down from the ends and join them with a wide, smooth curve at the bottom, like a bowl.

  3. Step 3: The short stem

Start at the middle of the pot rim and draw a short straight line going up. Stop a little way above the rim.

  4. Step 4: The top leaf

At the top of the stem, draw a leaf outline with a pointy tip at the top and a rounded bottom. The stem should touch the bottom of the leaf.

  5. Step 5: The leaf vein

Inside the big leaf, draw a gently curved line starting near the top. Bring it down to the bottom of the leaf where it meets the stem.

  6. Step 6: The left stem

On the left side of the rim, draw a curved line that bends up and to the left, like a small hill.

  7. Step 7: The left leaf

At the end of the left stem, draw a pointy leaf outline lying on its side. The stem already runs inside it as the vein.

  8. Step 8: The right stem

On the right side of the rim, draw another curved line bending up and to the right.

  9. Step 9: The right leaf

At the end of the right stem, draw a pointy leaf outline tilting up and to the right. The stem already runs inside it as the vein.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a houseplant in a pot

  • Draw the pot first and make it wide. A wide pot gives the leaves room to spread out and keeps the plant from looking tippy.
  • For each leaf, start at the stem and draw one curved side up to a sharp tip. Then draw the other side back down to meet the first.
  • Let the stems on the left and right curve a little instead of going straight. Then the leaves look like they are reaching for the light.
